Generic Singulair is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It is used for the treatment of bronchoconstriction, a condition where air passage in the lungs gets narrowed. It should not be given to a child without the consent of a doctor.  This generic medicine is used for the treatment of asthma and seasonal allergies, allergic rhinitis, urticarial, etc.  Generic Singulair functions by blocking the action of leukotriene D4 on the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor that is present in the lungs and bronchial tubes, by binding to it. This results in reduction of bronchoconstriction and hence inflammation occurs.  Generic Singulair is available in the market under different trade name such as Montelukast, Montelo-10, Monteflo and Lukotas.

Generic Singulair belongs to the class of drugs that is used for treating allergic reactions in the body. It is high on demand among the user spanning all over the world for treating seasonal allergic symptoms as well as exercise-induced bronchospasm. Generic Singulair contains Montelukast sodium as active ingredient. The medicine is available in different strengths such as 4 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg. In addition to active ingredients, the medicine that is a film coated one has coating of different inactive ingredients such as carnauba wax, red ferric oxide, hydro-oxy-propyl methylcellulose, yellow ferric oxide, etc. The inactive ingredients in the tablets of Singulair slightly vary with the strength. Some of the common inactive ingredient present in the tablets is red ferric oxide, croscarmellose sodium, aspartame and many more.

Generic Singulair should be stored at room temperature that varies from 15-30 degree centigrade. The generic medicine should be protected from light, heat, dampness and moisture. It should be placed in such a place that is not reachable to pets and kids, preferably in a closed and locked cupboard.

Side effects:

Some patients get allergic reaction after the intake of Singulair such as breathing, swelling in face, lips, etc. Sometimes patients get serious side effects and less serious side effects as well. In general, following are some of the common side effects of the medicine:

  • Rash on skin

  • Muscle weakness

  • Numbness

  • Tremor

  • Spot under skin

  • Unusual bleeding

  • Severe sinus pain & skin reaction

  • Mood changes & irritation

  • Headache

  • Upset stomach & stomach pain

  • Tiredness

  • Fever, stuffy nose, cough, hoarseness, sore throat

  • Tooth pain

  • Abdominal or stomach pain

  • Bloody nose

  • Joint pain

  • Pain or tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones

  • Shortness of breath or troubled breathing

Drug Interactions:

Generic Singulair might interfere in the action of some other medicine that the patient is using for keeping their health fit and fine. To avoid such situations, it is better to keep a list of all medicine that is being used and let your doctor know about it. The patient should always take the medicine as per suggestion of the doctor. The dose should neither be increased nor be decreased without consulting to the doctor.


Dosage:

Generic Singulair can be taken with or without food orally. The dose for the generic Singulair is based on the severity and response of the treatment. If the patient is using chewable tablet then it should be chewed properly before swelling. If used by a child and child is not able to chew the tablet then should take advice from the doctor. There should be fixed timing in a day for the intake of the medicine and the user need to take at that time only. Generic Singulair is used both asthma & allergy and the user need to take the dose in the evening.

However, if Singulair is used for preventing allergy, then it needs to be taken either in the morning or evening. Some patient uses Singulair for preventing their breathing problem during exercise. In this situation, the medicine need to be taken at least 2 hours before exercise and not just before, else it might increase the chances of side effects. Those users who are using Singulair for bronchoconstriction should not take additional dose within 24 hours of the previous dose.

 

Missed dose:

For getting optimum result, the patient should not miss their dose. However, if the dose is missed, then it should be taken as soon as remembered. If it is time for the next dose, then they should skip the missed dose and take the next dose as per their planning. The patient should not take any extra medicine for balancing that missed dose.


Overdose:

If overdose of the medicine is experienced by the patient, then they should contact to the doctor immediately.


Precautions:

  • The patient should take their dose for Singulair as suggested and prescribed by the doctor. Generic Singulair is not used for the treatment of acute asthma attack. In this case, the patient needs to keep rescue medicine for the same.

  • The user of Singulair should not stop or increase/decrease the dose themselves else it might lead to serious problem in them.

  • If the patient experiences neuropsychiatric changes after the intake of Singulair then they must consult their medical advisor.

  • Those patients who are sensitive to Aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug should avoid these medicines if already taking generic Singulair.
